From Cal:
We had a good turnout at the Mill Casino 4th of July Military Salute, with 5 vehicles on display - and guess what - we had a truck with us this time, not all jeeps! (not that I'm opposed to jeeps since I have 2). Jim Shipp brought his Navy M37 for display (which also hauled my display stuff back and forth - thanks!), along with Bob Reinke's 1943 MB, Mike Powter's 1943 MB, Ron Johnson's 1942 GPW and my 1943 GPW.
Unfortunately, they were limited in space and we had to drop the Bantam trailers out in the parking lot. But we did have a front row seat for an amazing air show that included among others, a B25 WWII bomber, an F86 Saber Jet, and a Mig 17 Russian Jet. They've indicated we'll have more room next year, so plan on joining us and enjoying the show.
Thanks to Ron Johnson for setting that up for us!
We accomplished some things at our irregularly scheduled club meeting held on Saturday July 11th, such as:
-due to a busy car show and parade schedule of the summer months, we're going to hold monthly club meetings only in the winter months from October thru April, and then in the summer months meet only in June and August, skipping July and September.
-speaking of displays previously, we kicked around some ideas for developing a more enhanced club display, along the lines of a military encampment. Some ideas kicked around were any army tent, a sandbag bunker and a camo-netting canopy. This would be to enhance our display beyond the simple club banner and commemorative sign trees that I currently haul around and put up. We'd like some volunteers to form a committee to explore ideas and bring some suggestions back to the club, so if you'd like to flex your creative muscles, this would be a good exercise! Please contact me at either 541-999-7965 or militaryjeeps@q.com, if you're interested and willing.
-we also formed a volunteer calling committee to call members to remind and urge attendance at meetings and events, so when Bob Reinke, Carl Middleton or Daryl Parsons contacts you, you'll know why! Thanks guys for volunteering!
-we welcomed a new member - Bob Woerner of Florence. While Bob's 1952 Chevy 1-ton telephone service truck is not an actual veteran military vehicle (just as my CJ is not), it will soon be sporting an OD paint scheme, and will be a welcome addition to our club. Please extend a big welcome to Bob.
NEXT EVENT - ANNUAL STEARMAN FLY IN - LAKESIDE - AUGUST 1ST
It's time already for the annual Stearman fly in at the grass field in Lakeside. They are hoping to bring a vintage Boeing 40 passenger Bi-plane to the event this year as well as the others who will be winging over the field and dropping down for display. Several of us are camping on Friday and Saturday nights so we can appear on the field by 9:30 am on Saturday. To help us organize our display, please contact me either on my cell 541-999-7965 or e-mail: militaryjeeps@q.com if you DO plan on attending - so we can get a head count.
AFTER THAT, it's the next quarterly Aviation Hertitage Night at the Florence airport, hosted by club member Sam Spayd. I understand there will be two speakers at this event, which will be held in conjunction with a BBQ on Saturday afternoon on the 22nd. Please plan on joining us as this is another excellent opportunity to display our vehicles to folks who really appreciate them. Again, please contact me at the phone number and e-mail address above if you DO plan to be there.
Thanks - Cal Applebee
