November/December 2010

Cal's Comments:
We may have had a small turnout at our regular November meeting, but it was very fruitful - we signed up two new members - Jeff McGill and Paul Gargis. Paul is a local Florence resident in search of the elusive M151, and Jeff splits his time between Florence and Yuba City CA, where he recently picked up what he thought was a basket case CJ that actually turned out to be an authentic MB! It's always great to see new enthusiasts discover and join the hobby - and grow in their knowledge and appreciation of OD green! Welcome guys!
I've had a change take place in my garage - the M100 trailer is gone, the 1954 Ford Fordor is up for sale, and I'm chipping away at the 1951 M38 recently acquired from my neighbor Dave Ostoin. Most of the civilian appendages have been removed (or will be by the time you read this). The battery took a charge; the fuel tank held gas, and once gas reached the carburetor, it started right up, and once warmed up, settled down and ran smooth. There's nothing like a jeep motor starting and running on a new acquisition - keeps the Wife happy too!
I sure hope you can join us for the December 11 combination meeting and Christmas lunch. The meal and fellowship is always good, but we also have some serious business to attend to as well - elections. Bob & Melba Reinke have lived up to their commitment of last year to do one more year as Secretary/Treasurer, but definitely want to pass the task on to a successor. Thank you, Bob & Melba, for a job well done! Mike Powter has done a great job as Editor and is willing to keep doing so. With his visits to other clubs, events and regions, he always contributes wonderful stories and photos - thanks Mike!
Don Gleason and his wife Kathy have graciously offered to host another summer event at their place outside of Veneta - we may even turn it into a campout! There are lots of ways and opportunities to serve the club and hobby, and enjoy your military vehicle - so hope you will!
I wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving, and a very Merry Christmas!
Cal

OTHER STUFF & comments from Mike

The December meeting/Elections/Christmas party is set for 1130 hours on December 11th: The club will provide a Ham and you’re invited to please bring a side dish, salad, veggies, desert, appetizers etc. We need to let Cal know if you are planning to come and with how many people and what side dish you plan. You’re welcome to also BYOB. I’m sure they’ll be enough coffee and soda to go around. Many thanks again for Sam hosting us at his hanger.
This club meeting is a very important one, we have elections coming up. As Cal has mentioned, Bob and Melba want to rotate out of the position. Please consider running for secretary/Treasurer. As a club we cover a large area and so much of the duties with this position can be achieved over the Internet and by mail, in other words, you don’t have to live in Florence. Also if you want to be of assistance to the president, secretary/treasurer and Newsletter editor please let us know. I would like the assistance of a technical writer and maybe someone computer savvy for a blog or even a web page or Facebook or a Forum.
2010 is coming to an end and I spent the year fitting in as many events as I could and I have a list of must do ones for 2011.
If anyone has any special 2010 events they’d like to share, please send me your stories.
The meeting and time we spent at Don and Kathy’s is on my must do list for 2011 as a meeting and club get together event. Remember any member can host a meeting/get together and it is encouraged to do so.
Both 2010 Tower park events were a great experience for me including the journeys down and back. That’s another on my must do list.
All the parades and shows I went to were a lot of fun and very enjoyable and those I missed I heard were great. Hopefully I’ll make most of them in 2011.
The one I missed in 2010 and will be on my must do list for 2011 and that's the Albany Veterans day parade. They say it’s the largest Veteran Parade west of the Mississippi. It’s a year away and it would have to be an overnighter, in 2011 it’ll be on a Friday.
As I travel around I always look for Military Surplus stores because I just love them and I’m putting together a list of stores together with a list of Militaria dealers and antique stores that have Militaria items. I would appreciate if you would send me details of any you know about and hopefully we’ll have a good list going for our members use. This can also include gun dealers that have good historical items.

Please send in your stuff for articles and pictures too. Do mark it that you want it in the news. If anyone has any events they’d like a club showing for 2011 also let us know. The ideal way to write something is e-mail or attachments so all I need to do is cut and paste.
In the Newsletter for 2011, technical “know how” (even if it’s old hat to many of us) would be good. As we know our vehicles have poor lights for driving at night so some knowledge on “clip on” temporary lights would be great. Doing what we can to preserve the historical accuracy and not getting so accurate and reliving the wrecks of the blackout days and hopefully we’re not going to get shot at. I have used a LED bike light on mine but something with brake and turn signals would be great. Are there any inventors out there? Any articles on fashion, I’m talking about uniforms and equipment and weapons that go with our vehicles and of course a piece on how to properly dress up a jeep or other MV would be great.
Some of our members are involved with the Military Heritage Museum and on December 5th they have an event: Here is a press release I received from them:
